Surf Lodge Under Fire From Concerned Citizens

The Concerned Citizens of Montauk have used the Freedom of Information Law to obtain information about the Surf Lodge on Edgemere Road in Montauk, which opened in May 2008 and has been the target of complaints ever since. The information was requested because the group thinks that the Town of East Hampton and the Suffolk County Health Department have been lax in enforcement at the Surf Lodge and that it was “time to get to the bottom of it.”

Bedell Cellars to host Parrish Business Council Networking Event

The Business Council of the Parrish Art Museum will host An Evening at Bedell Cellars on Wednesday, June 23, from 6 to 8 pm. The annual event offers members of the business community an opportunity to socialize while enjoying Bedell wines, seasonal hors d’oeuvres, live music, and a silent auction. As a special bonus, Dan Rattiner, founder of Dan’s Papers, will be on hand to autograph copies of his new book In the Hamptons Too.

New Swedish-Designed Hotel Helps Stuffy East Hampton Get Hip

Maybe it’s because if you truly are somebody, you’d already own a house in the Hamptons, or plan to rent one for the season, or certainly at least know someone with a guest room. No matter the reason, it’s a fact that there’s a dearth of hip hotel options on the east end of Long Island. Weekend visitors to the Hamptons can choose from glorified motels or stodgy historic inns (both of which will snare you with a three-night minimum at top rates). Until now.

Swedish hotelier Jenny Ljungberg of c/o Hotels took over the East Hampton landmark the Maidstone Arms in 2008 and renamed it c/o The Maidstone. She first reworked the restaurant with a slow-food focus, something she pioneered at her five other properties in and around Stockholm.

Hampton looks to Town Center guru for downtown

Hampton is close to entering a contract with one of the developers of the new Peninsula Town Center to draw up a vision for downtown Hampton.

Yaromir Steiner, chief executive of Steiner+Associates, met with city officials for a brainstorming session on downtown redevelopment on March 11, shortly after the opening of the new town center.

Since then the Downtown Hampton Development Partnership has been working with Steiner to draw up a more formal arrangement.

Terry O’Neill, Hampton’s planning director, said he believes the city is close to executing a contract with Steiner.

“We are trying to set up the first working visits which will be in July,” he said.

Diddy ‘Wife’ Arrested

Deranged Stalker Arrested at Diddy’s Hamptons Home

When groupies attack! A deranged Florida woman claiming to be Diddy’s wife was busted for trespassing near his East Hampton home last week after asking locals where she could find the rap mogul’s residence. Cemelia Green, 35, of Jacksonville, was arrested outside of a Bianca Road residence she mistook for Diddy’s spread located less than a mile away on Hedges Banks Drive.

She told a confused maintenance worker there that she was married to the entertainer and owned the home. Police arrested her at the scene and charged her with trespassing and criminal mischief for breaking a sliding glass door at the residence.

Hamptons Home Sales Soar

Things are looking up in the Hamptons. Buoyed by a rising financial tide down on Wall Street, the volume of property sales in the ritzy Long Island beachfront community surged by 59% in the final quarter of the year, compared with the hyper-depressed levels of a year earlier, according to a report released Thursday. The results mirrored activity in Manhattan, where activity also picked up in the second half.

“It is still the Hamptons, people see value there,” said Dottie Herman, chief executive of Prudential Douglas Elliman, adding that her brokerage logged its best sales month of the year in the Hamptons in December. Typically, December is the slowest month. “There were a lot of people who saw opportunity to get into the market at a good price.”

Madge Takes it to the Ranch

Pop singer Madonna has purchased a horse ranch in the Hamptons. Madonna loves to ride horses. The horse ranch sits on 30 acres of land and cost the “Material Girl” $9.6M.

The 51-year-old mother of two purchased the ranch from the ex-wife of designer Calvin Klein. Part of the purchase agreement stipulated that Madonna must keep the property as a working equine center. The property is called the Wild Ocean Farm.

Reportedly, Madonna is also interested in purchasing an adjoining plot of land on which to build a mansion.

This is not Madonna’s first real estate purchase this year. She bought a $40M mansion in New York City in April. The four-story brick townhouse has 13 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, 9 fireplaces, wine cellar, garden, and elevator.

Carter Glatt, a sixteen-year-old junior at the Horace Mann School, is lanky, with black hair and long eyelashes. He loves to play sports, especially football and tennis. He speaks in a slightly stiff, respectful manner that suggests that he’s used to conversing with adults. He carries a BlackBerry with a crack down the front. Last summer, he started a business, but he wouldn’t be able to run it if his mother didn’t drive him around.

Glatt’s family owns a weekend house in Southampton (his father is a hedge-fund manager), and one recent Saturday he was sprawled in the back seat of his mother’s Mercedes S.U.V., narrating a tour of the neighborhood for a visitor. “Is Bernie Madoff’s house on there?” he asked himself. “Yup, I think it’s 216 Montauk Highway.” A copy of the Hampton Star Map—Glatt’s creation, which he sells for seven dollars and ninety-five cents—was spread out in front of him.
