To get to the Montauk Lighthouse, simply keep driving on 27 East until you hit it. History buffs will enjoy that is was commissioned by George Washington in 1796. It is the oldest lighthouse in New York state and the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the country. We toured the Keeper’s House, which houses exhibits and historical artifacts. The best part was the renderings of the lighthouse done by high school art and photography students. As for the lighthouse itself, there are 137 steps to the top. We had to climb them because we could. It’s quite narrow in there! Once at the top, you can only peek your head out, and not walk around. The views from the grounds of the lighthouse are quite stunning and reason enough to go (and then you’d only pay for parking). $8.50 admission to the museum and lighthouse.
To27 Tip: Paying for parking at the lighthouse also gets you free access to parking at Hither Hills beach that day so hit that on your way back west. You can get a map showing the way there from the parking attendant.
