At 2 a.m. on a recent Saturday, Calvin Mercer was ready as a young man stumbled out of Georgica, an East Hampton nightclub.
Mercer folded up a small Italian scooter, placed it in the man’s trunk, took the keys and drove his passenger home. Then he scootered along back roads to return to the club, where he waited for the next person who has too good a time to get behind the wheel.
Mercer is a driver for Lilybug Scooters, a company that exists to get Hamptons partygoers — and their BMWs, Porsches and Lamborghinis — safely home after an evening on the town.
Lilybug was founded by William Heath, 26, a British native who bought 15 two-cycle Di Blasi scooters and moved to the Hamptons three summers ago. His inspiration came from his friend Lily Hasting-Bass, who was killed in Ireland by a drunken driver several years ago.
Heath said several clubs this summer have asked Lilybug to provide drivers because they want to avoid the danger and legal liability that arise when patrons drink too much and then hit the road…
