Tobie Giddio’s drawings have appeared in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. Her advertising clients include Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Tiffany & Co. Now a resident of Sag Harbor, Tobie is opening her home and studio this weekend for a special exhibit of her personal handmade archival screen prints and giclee prints in small editions.

How did you become an artist?  What techniques do you use?

I have been drawing since I was a child, have always loved it. My work consists of a sumi ink drawing on paper that is then layered with colored translucent films cut with a straight edge razor blade.

What do you love about the Hamptons?

We are now docked in Sag Harbor so it is awesome to just get on the sailboat and explore the area. It’s really beautiful out here and I have come to really appreciate that.

I love the yoga out here. If I hadn’t found Yoga Shanti and the teachers Colleen Saidman and Rodney Yee I may not have been able to get into it. My yoga practice is basically the foundation of my life and if I couldn’t find that spiritual haven, it wasn’t going to work.

Tell us about what we can expect at your exhibit.

My exhibit is a presentation of work I have created on my own in my studio. I spend a fair amount of time working for clients but it is this work that I feel is the root of what I do. There is a series of handmade screen prints with varying subjects; abstractions of beauty in the forms of nature and fashion in black and white and full color.

Then there is “One Through Eight” which is a recent series of abstracted fashion drawings. They are not based on actual clothing though, more so an impression of shapes and lines derived from seeing beautiful clothing, my version of creating couture, as if they are just walking out onto the runway one after the other…These drawings seem to evolve in such a way. They are these beings that literally present themselves to me on the page one after the next.
