For me, spending an odd weekend at a friend’s house out East isn’t really enough and I don’t own my house – yet! So, I went in for a quarter-share in Southampton with the intention of making some new friends, enjoying a full social life, but most importantly, meeting someone special in a crowd smaller and more intimate than that of the City.
Friday night I went to Georgica for dinner with some friends of one of my female housemates. The crowd was surprisingly older: I would guess mid-30s to 50s. Every man that approached me was seasoned in experience by light years more than myself.
Guys buy you drinks and expect that to be an opener for you to throw yourself at them like they bought you a diamond. Not ALL, but some. The rest understand that offering to get someone a drink is the gentlemanly thing to do. The small talk and energy drinks were not enough to keep me out and awake, so I went home hoping tomorrow would be more promising.
The next day my housemate and I headed to East Hampton for shopping, but I felt in the mood to mix and mingle. We headed to my friend’s other house share and met about 25 people, mostly single, who were ALL about the party even though many were past 30.
I realized that the daytime meetings are usually more fruitful. I exchanged numbers with some boys but they will probably turn out to be friends. None of them seemed like a real prospect romantically cuz they were all about the party.
That night my house share friends and I headed out to Lily Pond. Amidst the noisy club, familiar faces, friends, and debauchery, I actually met a really interesting guy: WHO LIVES IN AUSTRALIA and is visiting…totally, my luck. We danced and joked for a few hours. Realizing there was no point in exchanging numbers, we promised to find each other on Facebook.
All in all, it seems many women are out in the scene not just to make new connections and be photographed but really to meet someone. And for some reason, the Eastern End seems to hold the fantasy and promise of finding a mate for the good life. Let’s see how it goes!
